3 shampoos you need to try if you have dry, sensitive skin and/or eczema.

Washing our hair is a necessity however for many of us, irritation and a dry scalp follows. Many shampoos contain harsh chemicals that can strip the scalp of moisture whilst also irritating sensitive skin.

Having suffered with eczema and sensitive skin since a teen and having gone through Topical Steroid Withdrawal over the past few years, it’s fair to say I’ve tried a few haircare ranges. Here I share my top 3 shampoos for dry, sensitive, eczema-prone skin which will not only leave your hair feeling amazing but will leave your skin feeling good too!

1. Olsson Sensitive Shampoo (Normal/Dry Hair)*

Free from : Silicone, Fragrance, Colourants, SLS

Allergy UK approved. Vegan Friendly. Cruelty Free.

Olsson hair care, having been formulated from three years of development between salons, professionals and chemists, is a hair care range designed to offer salon performance without irritation and I’d say I agree! Over the past year I’ve worked my way through their range and now use their Shampoo and Conditioner as well as their leave-in conditioner and sensitive hairspray as part of my daily/weekly hair routine.

Their Shampoo does contain SLES (Sodium Laureth Sulfate) which many mistake for the harsh one, SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate). The difference being that SLS has been identified as a common skin irritant if left on skin for prolonged periods of time. SLES however whilst are derived from SLS go through a process which reorganises the compound making it much kinder to the skin and hair. Unlike SLS, Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) won’t aggravate your scalp or strip it of any excess moisture. Olsson explain it nicely here – SLS and SLES – What’s the difference

NOTES: No residue build up, lathers nicely and a little goes a long way. Perfect for Vegans too.

2.Typology Nourishing Shampoo (Biolipid complex 1% + camellia oil) 200ml

Free from : Parabens, Phenoxyethanol, Paraffin Oil and Sulphates.

This shampoo by Typology is 95% naturally-derived and claims to repair and nourishes the hair fibres deeply whilst smoothing the hair cuticles. It also hydrates and soothes the scalp without weighing hair down.

This product is relatively new to me and over the past month it’s what I’ve been using. I like the consistency of the shampoo and that you don’t need too much to wash your hair (and I have a lot currently with my extensions). Used in conjunction with their conditioner, my hair is left lightweight, clean, and hydrated without stripping my skin/scalp of moisture. What I love is that it visibly reduces the appearance of split ends with the clever Biolipids and Camellia oil (which is rich in fatty acids) which help to smooth the cell membranes on the hair.

Whilst it is tested under dermatological control it does contain Linalool/ Limonene which can irritate those with an allergy.

Notes: Light-weight feel. Gorgeous packaging. Lathers nicely. Whilst it is made with mainly natural ingredients, the linalool may irritate some with sensitive/eczema prone skin if they are allergic to it.

Balmonds offer a natural shampoo which is free of perfume, soap and SLS’s. It’s light formula doubles up as a body wash and is gentle enough to be used on babies from just 6 weeks. It’s great as it doesn’t contain any of the irritating synthetic nasties those with allergy-prone skin might want to avoid so is our product of choice for my boys weekly post-swim shower. It’s made with herbal extracts and is plant-based with sensitive skin in mind. I love that it’s a multi-purpose wash which means using it in the shower won’t upset the skin on your body as it is so mild and gentle. I love this for my boys as a shampoo and body wash and like to take it to the gym for my post-workout shower product.

Notes: Great as a multipurpose product. Perfect for use on children with sensitive skin/scalps.

As always, remember I will only recommend products that I have used and tried myself so rest assured that the above shampoos are really great products in my view and won’t irritate skin. That said, it is always worth remembering that we all have different skin and different allergies/sensitivities so what works for some, may not for others therefore make sure to do a patch test before you use new products.

Olsson have a patch test that you can order here.
